The middle school football team for Augusta Christian claimed the AAMSL Championship on Thursday night with a 40-34 victory over St Mary’s of Augusta. The victory capped off an undefeated 7-0 season for the Young Lions.
In the title game, St Mary’s jumped out to a 14-0 lead before AC was able to put together a 4 play, 67 yard drive that ended with a 31 yard TD run by Elijah Crawford. St Mary’s answered with Clark Jackson’s 3rd TD of the night to make the score 20-8 with 41 seconds remaining in the first half. But the Lions were able to quickly put together a 6 play 65 yard drive in 38 seconds to make the score 20-16 at the half.
The Lions took the opening kickoff of the 2nd half and marched 65 yards, using almost the entire 3rd quarter clock. The drive ended with Elijah Crawford’s 3rd TD of the night to make the score 24-20. St Mary’s quickly answered as Clark Jackson took the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a TD. But AC came right back with a 3 play, 60 yard drive including a 45 yard TD run by Evan Haerle.
Then it was time for the Lion Defense to make a stand getting a big 4th down stop with 5:32 left in the game. Two plays later, Elijah Crawford was in the end zone again for the 4th time, this time on a 52 yard TD run, making the score 40 – 27 in favor of Augusta Christian.
The Lions offense put up 351 yards rushing, and added another 81 yards thru the air. Evan Haerle had 159 yards and 1 TD on the ground while Elijah Crawford had 155 yards and 4 TDs. Bryce Reynierson led the Lions in receiving with 5 catches for 69 yards. Clark Jackson led St Mary’s in every category including 24 carries for 256 yards, 4/4 on PATs, and 5 total TDs.
